Art from light and shadow

Yesterday I came across an amazing artwork made from building blocks (thanks Thalia!):

Building Blocks by Kumi Yamashita

It's by Kumi Yamashita, a Japanese artist who makes amazing pictures out of unusual materials.  The blocks are positioned such that their shadows merge to form the image. It's part of her series Light and Shadow, which also includes an image made from the shadow cast by rumpled fabric:

She also makes portraits by pulling out lighter threads from fabric:
