A fun wander at Eric Armishaw reserve

For my Sabbath 'fun thing' today I went to Eric Armishaw Park just after low tide for a wander over the beach and mudflats.  In the process, I learned that mangroves have rather odd but kind-of pretty flowers:

and that honey bees love them:

Mangrove honey anyone??!!  I also saw one tiny wasp (?) and a bumble bee :-)

There was also quite a lot of what I think might be sea rocket [UPDATE: a botanist friend identified it as an Atriplex, and I'm pretty sure it's Atriplex prostrata - handily, the whole genus is edible, as I'd already nibbled on some and it's yum!], interspersed with the mangroves:

Tiger came with me.  We both spent some time flopped on the shells in the sun :-)

It amazes me how such a neat spot is so close to the motorway :-)

After walking out along the spit and across the mangroves I came back to the beach to rest and reflect in the shade - and to enjoy looking up through the pōhutukawa leaves.  I was reading Genesis 1 and was struck with wonder at the idea of God choosing to make humanity in His own image/likeness.  Such an honour!!

Martin got me beach shoes for Christmas.  I've mostly used them for swimming, but they were great today for wandering over all manner of slippery and uncertain surfaces :-)

Ready to go home - complete with small sample of putative sea rocket, now identified as an Atriplex :-)
